Ronan's report

Monday November 5th, 2007

Got to meet Stuntman Ronan and Big Fish Anna this weekend. Anna is known for schooling Ronan on his own water by catching 2 monster fish in one day to his... well.... Ronan's known for stunting, mostly involuntarily, and things like THIS (91mb movie, right-click and "save target as"). He's on the way to NZ for his annual trout expedition; she's on the way to remote parts of Africa to dig up some old stuff archaeologist style. They just happened to be coming through LA, so we hooked up halfway on the east side of the Sierra.

We hit the lake to a cool morning. Word was the water temp had dropped from its summer high, and fishing had turned on a few weeks ago. Apparently, with ice on the shore as evidence, it kept dropping. We picked off some dinks near the shore feeding on midges, but it didn't quite match up with the record browns on the walls of the breakfast cafe.

Not to say the big fish weren't there, we witnessed something completely new to me. Something I'd been almost skeptically watching for since seeing Paul tie up his floating fry imitation (how can you not be skeptical when you see Paul's tying). The tiny dibbles and quiet surface along the shoreline were interupted by sudden violence. A strange loud rise then just moments later 20' away and right on the beach a huge writhing dorsal and tail slashed a tear in the water. Before either Ronan or I could get there, it was gone. One of the lurkers had just crept in and attacked the schoolies. The shipmans and #18 midge dropper strung on with 4LB tippet were painfully frail in comparison.

Fishing was slow but I had a good time. It was great meeting Ronan and Anna, as it always is when you meet other loopers. Safe travels and have a great time in NZ!

Cheers! Eric

(Ronan, Here's a couple pics of Pyramid Lake. Safe travels and have a great time in NZ!)
