Ronan's report

Saturday October 13th, 2007

Welcome Lasse to our growing list of instructors who want to teach YOU! Lasse is FFF Master, AAPGAI Master and on the FFF Board of Governors. He's a great caster and instructor. Well worth checking out if you're in Denmark - also he does group lessons around Europe.

If you're a certified instructor and would like a listing in our directory, email me for details of how to join.

Sexyloops: your Number 1 place for casting instruction.

While you are here, be sure to check out our shopping page, here you can buy from our very own Sexyloops clothing line - funky hard-wearing flyfishing gear, Way Yin's superb Spey-to-Z video - ask for a signed copy! - and of course our DVDs - Revolution coming out soon (hard to believe, I know).

Also: email me to book a lesson! I'm in the UK next week for two weeks - and who knows when that will happen again.

We're going to have a bit of a change in direction here at Sexyloops. Hang on to your shorts, boys and girls, it's all about to happen...

So this and last week's topic is and was:

"Hackle Hecklers"

Bob and Magnus have been going at it. Bob says that Magnus and Paul both like hackles, but they're crap really, and Magnus says that Paul and Magnus both like hackles and Bob only uses one fly anyway. Interestingly I can't actually ever remember saying whether I liked or disliked hackles, indeed it's not something I've ever had an opinion on really. Up until now...

I do know this: I use them. Especially in fast water, where the hackled dry keeps the fly afloat [Bob]. And of course I'm very keen on hackles or bits of hackles on wets, nymphs and streamers. On stillwaters and smooth water I use hackles less on dries, but even then sometimes that's what the big fish want. OK let's have some maths from Flyblog...

Side 1, three colours woolly buggers with hackles. Three colours of rabbit sans. 3-3.

Side 2, 9 patterns with, 19 patterns without. 12-21 [bugger, says Magnus]

Side 3, 8 patterns with, 4 without. 20-25 [oh oh, says Bob]

Side 4, 6 patterns with, 5 without. 26-30, which could well be the score by which England win the World Cup next weekend, assuming they win today.

So there you have it, 30 out of 56 flies say their pattern prefers it without... Of course this is very unfair since side 2 is pretty much complete and that's the stillwater section, and I've only just started on my river dry flies, but if you're a Member you'll know this shit.

As an aside: It's very difficult to hang a heavy nymph under one of Bob's emergers and I'm almost certain that if you could, the emerger would be a monster, probably spin, and you'd never see it in fast water. (Incidentally, when it comes to emergers I think it's hard to beat the bow-tie suspender, but even that I never use anywhere except on the point, because it spins... and besides I can't tie Bob's fly)

What I'm not a big fan of is CDC. I use them of course and carry a bunch, normally, but I don't have rows and rows of them because a foam suspender - or even just a S/F emerger - can often do the job better. I find Shipman's, Bob's Bits and the Suspenders I use fare very well on rivers in different sizes and colours. And if I had to pick one colour for small sizes it would be claret, no matter what the natural is. Exciting stuff. Mind you I don't consider myself to be an expert stream angler. There are some types of rivers where I just don't have enough experience - remember where I grew up - but I'm catching up fast and learning everywhere I go.

Speaking of which, this weekend I'm in Bosnia. Teaching yesterday and two days of fishing with Babuska today and tomorrow.

Lots happening, prepare for the Big Sock.

Cheers,
Paul
