Ronan's report

Friday June 1st, 2007

I had a really great day out fishing last week. I didn't catch a rediculous number of fish, maybe a dozen. I always lose count even when it's a handful. The fish weren't huge, the best was maybe 15", but they were healthy, strong and wild. They weren't rising all around me, just a sporatic splash every now and again let me know they were around. The hatch wasn't the thickest, but I was barely able to pick it out. The river wasn't huge or famous or secluded, maybe a little unknown to most but not new to me. It sure didn't elude the family of 6 camped a hundred yards downstream. Their 2 young girls splashed a bit in the sun as their 2 older boys were plinking in the brush (and managed to send a .22 round over my head. I was low and well covered by the bank and gave them a hollar at which point they apologized profusely.) Wasn't even the best fishing I'd seen there.

What made it so great and has left such a fond feeling with me was the applied learning. I chose my rod and line, adjusted my leader and tippet to suit my flies and the water, and rigged everything up right. My casting wasn't perfect, I stuck my fly in the grass, leaves and brush a couple times but didn't lose a fly and had control with positive curves, reaches, wriggles and parachutes. My roll casts were off the water giving the fly a bit more time to drift. I eyed and probed the different lies. It was all confidence and it was all happening.

The redbands were the perfectly fickle trout. If things were right, they'd rise. If not... It feels like being judged by nature and being deemed worthy. It's a great thing.

it's an exploration.. (bring flyrods) ~Paul Arden
