Ronan's report

Sunday April 29th, 2007

So, we've taken a forward position up the coast of Western Australia, at Exmouth. We're dug in and ready for whatever it throws at us. It's already thrown a week of shitty weather and huge swells at us, so we're wide awake. We holed up for a few days down at Gnaraloo and it pitched down for 24 hours straight. Gnaraloo has most of the aspects of a run down Mogadishu suburb, so you can probably picture what it's like in the pissing rain. We tied a lot of flies.

So, anyway, Rich thinks Australia is a weird place full of Dr Seuss animals. Roos, Emus walking around all over the place, etc. Carl, Rich, Morsie, Jeanie and I thought about this and decided we are definitely all anti-creationists. We had lots of time to work this kind of stuff out while we waited out the storm. I mean, if there is a god, what was he thinking? Did he get stoned or something when he did Australia? Take a look at a platypus and say we're wrong. A beaver tail and a duck bill, a bifurcated penis and snake fangs on their feet. He either made these Australian critters out of spare parts - or it's all just trial and error. Australia is the place to get your mind right about that kind of thing.

I'm learning lots about saltwater fly. Morsie is a great coach but he knocks back questions like pop flies. Insists we work it out. So I've worked through several fancy leader set-ups and now do it more or less like Morsie. I'm hanging on to my crimped leader idea for a while yet though. Rich and Carl are analysing my casting off those rocks and we're going to get rid of the creep this trip, once and for all. The Boneheads are a great bunch of guys. Good anglers too. We met them all Friday night and we got pissed and told lies. Casting evenings planned later this week. Fishing stars now.
