Ronan's report

Saturday April 28th, 2007

Pay for fishing? Uh? oh! What pays for fishing?

There it is... finally. After cross-sections, drawings and details, the highly toleranced aluminum and steel with a few synthetic surfaces are running precariously close to one another. The shaft, runout and true to a couple thousandths of an inch, passes through bushings and bearings. Precise machined plates and housings are anodized and assembled. The free spin check passes, and off for testing to be put through the paces.

It's not a reel. The 16000 pounds and 2500 horsepower motor sort of blow the 1 fishpower reels out the window like most others products that fall into the industrial rotating machinery category, pumps, turbines, compressors and such. This one pumps liquid methane and is destined with 16 brothers for Milford Haven. A man year at my not-really-job as lead mechanical designer to bring the pieces together, and for a while it'll be the most powerful on this planet until a facility in Texas (go figure) receives their 3400hp beast. Not as sexy as a reel, but it spins. In fact short of a power outage, there's not much that could stop it.

Cheers,
Eric
