Ronan's report

and How We Get Hurt by Dr. Gary Eaton

Saturday June 24th, 2006

A lot of people don’t realize that when the Big Bang exploded from whatever wasn’t there before, luck was created in that same instant. And like everything else in the universe, there’s only a certain amount of it. A finite amount of luck is a pretty scary thought if you consider how much is being used on a regular basis.

Luck is one of the key factors to success in fishing. Everyone seems to agree, and “Good luck” is an almost certain response when you say that you’re going off fishing. It’s chance that does it; the chance you’ll catch a fish. Chance and luck are like line and leader; one leads right to the other. You’ve no control of chance, but something must, and it’s luck.

Unfortunately, like the rest of the universe, most of the luck is hurtling away from us at unthinkable speeds, 'running out' is how most put it. That really leaves us with only the luck here on Earth. It's spread out with the rest of the matter, collected a little more densely in some items than others. It has an affinity for hats, clovers, rainbows, certain numbers, cats and such.

Each object only has a certain amount of luck attached it. Once that amount is expended, the object is luckless or dead in the case of the poor cat. Cats seem to get a rather regular fixed amount of luck as exhibitted by their 9 lives. There's enough for exactly 8 death avoidances; after that, "c'est la vie" or more accurately "that's the last life". This goes for hats and such as well, they're worth is expended. I don't pick up hapless lucky pennies, and all flies, no matter how eminent, meet their end.

Now to clear up a common misconception, there isn't really bad luck. There isn't anti-luck or luck-, just as there isn't really cold. It's just a very low level or entire absence of luck+ or heat to continue the metaphor. Perhaps it was expended early or prematurely as with beginner's luck. Great caution should exercised to avoid a premature dispensation. Just think of fishing taxes in order to avoid it.

Eventually, through attrition, your reserve will wear thin. A new hat might help temporarily, but to really develop a lasting solution, a switch of your reliance from luck to skill, which can be increased, is required. Looking back at some of those lucky catches and the factors involved could be rather enlightening. Besides, having the control within rather than without is a hell of a lot more empowering. I think it's called confidence, and the opposite sex will certainly notice as well.

Ben broke himself last week, and it must have been a little serious (and hopefully simply treated) because Doris filled in this week. Bless her soul. DoubleDoc explains how this all happened in another great article How We Get Hurt. Thanks Gary! and thanks to Lasse for the crazy action shots! Next time, a close look at carpal tunnel syndrome.
